Taryn Fiebig was an Australian opera and musical theatre soprano. She was a regular performer on stages for both Opera Australia and Pinchgut Opera. Her many roles as a principal soprano with Opera Australia have included Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Galatea in Acis and Galatea, Musetta in La bohème, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, The Woodbird (Der Ring des Nibelungen) and many others.
In 2008/09, she sang the leading role of Eliza Doolittle in the national tour of My Fair Lady. Taryn won a Helpmann Award for her portrayal of Lucy in Bliss (which she sang in Sydney, Melbourne, and at the Edinburgh Festival). She sang Esmeralda in The Bartered Bride for New Zealand Opera and was a regular soloist with the state symphony orchestras. She returned to Opera Australia in 2015 as Pamina, Zerlina and Susanna (in a new production of Le nozze di Figaro): in 2016, she sang Pamina, Despina (in the new Cosi fan tutte) and Gutrune in Der Ring des Nibelungen. She also appeared as soloist with the Adelaide Symphony and the Australian Haydn Ensemble.
In 2020, Fiebig appeared in the company’s opera Film A Delicate Fire, a journey through the madrigals of Baroque composer Barbara Strozzi. Fiebig also performed with Pinchgut in ABC Classic’s livestream broadcast in September 2020, one of the early live performances following easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Her last album was a collection of Romantic artsong in collaboration with pianist Scott Davie, On Eternal Love, released by ABC Classic in late 2020.
Fiebig studied as a cellist at the University of Western Australia, before deciding to focus on singing. She joined the Young Artist Program at Opera Australia in 2004 and remained with the company as a principal soprano until becoming a freelance artist in 2010.

She married New Zealand-born baritone Jud Arthur in 2015. She met her husband, singer Jud Arthur, in 2004, on her first day at Opera Australia. Arthur was married with two children. She was previously married to Australian composer Iain Grandage, the current Artistic Director of the Perth Festival.
Taryn Fiebig Illness – Taryn Fiebig Ovarian Cancer
Taryn Fiebig was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2017 and had to withdraw from a number of roles while undergoing treatment. She returned to the stage in 2018 and continued to perform through her treatments. She died in Sydney on Saturday 20 March 2021. She also had breast cancer four years prior her ovarian cancer diagnosis.
Taryn Fiebig Death
Taryn Fiebig passed away on 20 March 2021, at the age of 49 following a long illness ovarian cancer. Opera Australia announced the news in a statement: “One of Australia’s most loved singers has passed away. Taryn Fiebig was an astonishing and versatile soprano, with her Opera Australia repertoire covering everything from Mozart to Puccini, contemporary opera, musical theatre, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Wagner.”
Pinchgut Opera’s Artistic Director, Erin Helyard, paid tribute to Fiebig in a statement: “Taryn Fiebig was without question one of Australia’s greatest sopranos and she will forever be remembered as a superlative artist who lit up every stage she graced with her musicality, passion, and total commitment to the art. She excelled at every medium and genre she worked in, from seventeenth-century Italian opera to contemporary Australian works.
“She was a joy to work with: open-hearted, generous and wickedly funny. She has made me laugh so many times. Taryn was an exceptional mentor and teacher who was passionate about inspiring others with her abiding sense of musicianship and creative energy. She will be sorely missed by all in the Australian arts community, and especially all of us at Pinchgut Opera.”
OA Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini tweeted: “It is with great sadness to hear of Taryn Fiebig’s passing. Taryn was an extremely talented artist and a wonderful human being. She lived her life with such grace and generosity and was an inspiration to us. My condolences to Jud and family.”
