1.09 Hell Countess runs
I was after some mid level runes so I thought I'd make a few Hell Countess runs. After six runs, seven if you count the first run a few days ago, I've not seen a single rune. Plenty of RARES though. I've been running 1.09 on players4 with about 150% MF. I think I remember reading in the SPF that if you want runes it's best to remove all MF equipment. Is this true? Will the playersX effect the rune drop, other than reducing the no drop probability?

Hmm, guess you're just unlucky. Its not guarenteed you're get a rune from the Countess, just that she has a good chance to drop runes (up to 4 at a time).
/players X does affect the type of rune drop. Someone nice here will post a link to the very useful rune guide which explains this in detail  I can't do it since I'm still at work. IRRC, basically, its best to run countess at players 5 to get the best chance of dropping a mal/ist.
Magic find does not affect rune drops in any way. Its just that if you remove your mf equipment, you can do runs better, ie. more runs over time --> more runes.
What type of runes are you looking for. If they're not too high (thul->shael) maybe running NM cows might be better.

IIRC Countess item drop is calculated before her rune drop so if you are after runes from her rune drop you should run her at players 1.

I think esd is correct here. To explain, the Countess has two drops--a rune-only drop, and an item drop. The item drop is calculated first, and then any slots in her total drop which weren't filled due to a no-drop coming up are recalculated using her rune drop.
Therefore a lower players setting is actually BENEFICIAL for rune runs on the Countess, because it increases the chance of a no-drop, and a no-drop for the Countess means a rune. (Not sure if there's also a no-drop chance on her rune drop, mind you).

The above posts are true for 1.10.
More players is always better for 1.09 Countess.

I'm sort of looking for DOL to PUL, but I believe in 1.09 The Countess can drop up to a VEX.

I've just did two Countess runs on players1 with full MF and guess what a TAL on the first run and a RAL on the second. I also had TWO interesting finds on the first run. The Lidless Wall and a failed unique in the one drop.

Keep in mind that the Countess has lower odds of dropping a rune in 1.09.
In 1.09. She drops four items. Each item has a 25% chance of being a rune (I'm sure RTB will correct me if I'm wrong). So the number of runes can vary between 0 and 4 on each run, though you'll mostly commonly see 1 or maybe 2 runes.
In 1.10, I believe she has a 50% chance of dropping a rune per drop (although I believe higher players settings skew this towards the "item" pick rather than the "rune" pick).

Don't forget that in 1.09 their is the Bishisbosh bug... if you go into the Countess's room, then leave before killing her, and then come back to kill her, she will drop like she is Bishibosh instead of the Countess

Sincere is correct, and that is almost certainly the problem. I remember running her twenty-odd times for almost no result when I first joined here until someone set me straight.
It's even easier to trigger than Sincere suggests too. If you go into any of the side rooms (the dead-ends with gold on the floor) before going to here, you will probably encounter the bug too. To be sure, run straight to her, don't go sideways at all. After she's dead you can clear the rest out if you want.

well... not to brag.. but i actually found an ist and vex from 1.09 countess...
i used a javazon with +frw gear.. well... its just about 200-300 runs to find those
Though in 1.10... i found 1 ist, 2 mals, and lower runes from her... its about 200+ runs... less luckier though...
and about players settings... yeah.. it seemed to be true... if you increased the player settings... you will get less runes.. and will take you more time to kill her
about MF... it has no effect on increasing or decreasing chance of runes in dropping..
though the best bet of running the countess is a sorc.. mainly for her teleport skill...

As others pointed out, you want to run the countess at players 1 for the best chance to get runes. However, since your MF gear doesn't alter your rune drop percentage, you may as well run her wearing the highest MF gear possible (without compromising killing speed or safety), so that you may benefit from her non-rune drops as well. Ah, and make sure you don't hit the Bishibosh bug. Basically, if she drops 2 items and 4 potions, instead of 4 items and 0 potions, you've done something wrong.
My only Harlequin Crest, the one I haven't seen in 1000 Nightmare/Hell Meph runs, I owe to her.

I suppose it is, statistically I should have seen a few drop, but I don't really mind, seeing as I don't trade and only want to have one piece of every item. A grail thingy, yeah. Ah, the damned don't cry...
I used to run Meph with my Assassin, she had about 300 MF on her, including an Ali Baba and Rhyme on switch, if I recall correctly, and still maxed most resistances. Ultra-fast runs, minimal danger. Eventually, Mephy dropped her a Bartuc's, which made the runs even faster, but after 2 rare Loricated Mails, I lost all faith.

I'm pretty sure that Vex isn't a part of her rune drop but from her item drop, therefore you have very little chance of actually getting a Vex. But you never know  .

Thanx Sincere and Thrugg, I had not heard of the Bishisbosh bug. That would explain my drops I think. My usual tactic with my Burizon is to run into one of the side rooms and lure the baddies into it, then run around to the other side room and shoot the Countess in the back. I'm like that. I made two more runs and got a RAL and a LUM both on players1. I think I'll do a bit more experimenting today.

In 1.09 she has no rune drop/item drop. She has 25% to drop a rune using the direct route to the runes TC, and a 0.17% chance indirectly. So, just over 25% chance to get a rune from one pick.
